T5 technology offers a significant increase in both visible light and UV output compared to similar-length T8 lamps. For desert species, these lamps provide 12% UVB for the synthesis of vitamin D3 and 30% UVA, producing excellent natural colors. Additionally, they deliver 100% or more visible light than equivalent-length D3+ T8 lamps (un-reflected) and 95% more UVB than equivalent-length T8 lamps (un-reflected).
The benefits of T5 technology include a smaller diameter, at just 5/8 of an inch (16mm) compared to 1 inch (26mm) for T8 lamps, and flicker-free operation due to their use of efficient, high-frequency ballasts. These high-output T5 lamps are particularly useful for captive reptiles, as the extra power they provide helps keepers generate a good UV gradient and deliver safe basking quantities of UV over a much wider and deeper area.
